How to catch a fish?

How to catch a fish, well, no one can tell you with a 100% guarantee that they can instruct you how to catch a fish. I can give you the techniques to catch a fish, I can give you the advice on when to use each technique and which fly to use in different conditions, but all this will do is increase your chances of catching a fish, not catch you a fish, that part is down to you. Which is why we love fishing so much, you could be doing everything right and not catching, and then change a little thing like how long you let the fly sink or  slow your retrieval of the line down or speed it up, and then you are in. Please read the rest and you will see how the video relates to the blog.

In this video I get a bite, hook the fish and land it, but it was 40 minutes since my last bite. What did I do different; well I switched my video recorder on. Yes, I attribute me catching this fish to using my video camera. Now I don’t suggest you get you camera out to try to enhance your chances, but if you analyse what happens in the video you will see I have changed the way I fished that cast due to me having the video.

What the video actually did for me was a few things. Firstly, it gave the water a break from me constantly casting on it while I set up the camera equipment, which I think sometimes the fish needs, if you are constantly casting; the fish under the cast see the line hit the water and probably don’t bite. Secondly, I was on a boat, so I know I must have drifted 30-40 yards in the time that I set my equipment up, so I completely changed location without oars or engine…did the lack of noise help me? Finally, I think I caught the fish because I couldn’t retrieve the line at a uniform pace and it was certainly a slow retrieval than I had been doing.

So, these are all things to think about if you are not catching, try moving location, move slowly without noise and try a different retrieval speeds of the line when you cast out, also try not casting for a couple of minutes, it definitely worked for me. I didn’t change fly or line, just like I said at the beginning; a small change can make a huge difference have a try. Would advise against having a camera and trying to cast, retrieve, play then land the fish. The video is quite funny really and shows I know more about fishing than video recording or being a cameraman, but I end up with the right result!

Good hunting
