Lost Fish?
Have you ever lost a fish, whether that be hooking a fish and getting snapped, the fish spitting the hook, the hook coming out while you are trying to net the fish. of course you have, but fishing is all about catching fish….right? Well, I understand the statement and in essence it is very true, but is it realistic? Can you have a good day fishing if you don’t catch fish, or catch a few fish and lose a few fish?
My opinion is that we go fishing to have fun, we don’t need to go fishing to feed ourselves or our families, our lives don’t depend on the results of our fishing. Disagree? Well, if that was the case why don’t we use a drift net to go fishing, or use dynamite and wait until they float to the surface or electric shock the fish to the surface? Well, we don’t do that because the fun in fishing comes from pitting your wits, skill, knowledge and technical ability against a primeval species that has evolved to hunt and feed, and sometimes you lose.
We use delicate tackle to ensure we present our bait correctly, not to spook the fish and also, more importantly, we use light gear/equipment to give the fish a chance and have some fun, because While you are fishing there is always a chance your quarry will ‘get off’. So what happens when we hook into a good size fish (even if we don’t realise at first, ahem!), and it gets off? Do you think “darn, should have used a barbed hook” or “should have used much heavier line”? The answer is that we have to accept that that is fishing and carry on, it should make you more determined to catch next cast.
In this video you will see me lose a good fish (which I thought was small at fish because of the lack of fight), watch the video and you will see that no matter how perfect you play a fish this can happen. You can pick up some good tips on playing the fish and setting the hook, as well as having a great attitude to fishing. Oh, and those pylons are nowhere near me, they look really close but they are at least 300 feet away. Also, I have just realised that I have ‘bleeped’ out the wrong word, so i apologise in advance for the mild swear word!
Good hunting.
